Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn: The Final Empire was one of the latest picks to read in our book club and has been probably one of my favorite fantasy novels to date. It is the first of 3 books in the series.
It takes place in a dystopian world of Scadrial where there are a select few that are able to “burn” certain metals that will give them certain abilities (like superhuman strength, hearing/sight, shrouding themselves, etc). Even rarer, there are a few that are able to burn ALL of these metals. Of course, these people are hunted down by the Ruler and/or ostracized.
The novel has a remarkable way of building the world, the setting, the characters, the environment and is very intricate and precise about it. Although some might find it slow through some of these passages, I believe they are important so that as a reader, you can really imagine this other world in which these characters live – which I think was done successfully. The novel had me glued to it from start to finish and am very excited to start the second book in the series.
Anyone looking for a great dystopian/fantasy/magical type of book, this is a must read. 10/10.
