Seasons of Migration to the North

Seasons of Migration to the North is a postcolonial arabic novel published in the late 60’s that was later translated in many languages, including English.

The novel follows sudanese man, the unnamed narrator, returning home after going to school abroad and wanting to readily apply himself to helping his country and people. However, upon his return, he meets Mustafa and becomes fascinated by him.

The novel leverages remarkable lyricism and potent imagery to untangle some of the more subtle consequences of countries like Sudan AFTER war and annexation to other countries. The effects of colonialism and war always linger and take root.

The novel was banned in 1983 in Sudan for a while because of its rich sexual imagery and portrayal of women in Sudan.

Great piece of classic literature. 8/10. Recommend.
