The Dog Stars

This month’s pick was Peter Heller’s, The Dog Stars – a post apocalyptic story that focuses around Hig, the narrator of the story.

Overall, this book was fine. Unlike other books of this genre, this one wasn’t so much about what led the world to its destruction or any of the hard struggles we see other characters in the genre go through. Instead, it focuses on the life of Hig, his dog, and Bangley (Hig’s survival buddy) about a decade after the world wiped out most of humanity. They have all the commodities they can have (as far as the end of the world goes) like Cokes, beautiful landscapes, fishing, flying, gas, companionship.

I think the book tries to transcend the traditional genre themes and instead focus on the brighter aspects of the possible good that may come from a situation like this. This is further illustrated by the way the book is written – very poetic – punctuation, word choice and placement, rhythm of the paragraphs, dialog.

Overall, interesting. Cozy in a way. Not a huge fan of this particular genre, but still, 6/10 for me.
