One of our book club’s pick, Ian Reid’s We Spread, was indeed a very fascinating read that fell a bit short in my opinion. There was a lot of suspenseful buildup and even had me being very anxious and nervous for the narrator, an elderly woman transitioning from living alone to being in an elderly home – deep in a forest where only a couple more elderly folks live.
Besides the interesting and spooky storyline, the author employs an interesting technique of the unreliable narrator and as a reader, we know what this elderly, forgetful, scared woman knows…which could be a bunch of nothing. This technique really adds to the suspenseful nature of the novel…but also what damaged the overall storyline towards the end (at least for me).
I encourage anyone looking for a psychological thriller of sorts to give it a read and see what they think!
